Morocco Day 20: Marrakesh to Essouira
This morning we bade our farewells to Mo and the rest of the OAT gang (the Gang of 10) and began our trip overland to the town of Essaouira on Morocco's Atlantic coast.
Our drive was pretty uneventful and after our 12 hour bus trip, pretty quick. We reached the outskirts of Essaouira around noon, and stopped so Gabby's camel could take in the view. Afterall, it was his first exposure to an ocean having grown up in the Sahara.
After settling into our hotel, we went for a stroll into the medina (about a 3/4 mi walk from the hotel along the beach).
We were struck by the difference between the craziness of Marrakesh and the serene calmness here. The streets were not jam-packed and cacauphony heard in Marrakesh was absent.
We ate lunch-finally fish not tagine at a small family run restaurant .
The restaurant owner was admiring Molly's necklace of hamsas that Dave's Dad, Howard, had made for her.
After lunch the ladies decided to take a walk on the beach, Rich took a nap (fighting a cold), and Dave and I went for a swim in the hotel pool. As usual, the girls were the wisest.
Along the beach there were horses and camels
and gordeous views.
Rich was probably 2nd wisest with his nap.
The pool was a bizarre shape which made lap swimming without hitting walls difficult. It was also pretty chilly.
We had a nice dinner in the medina at another family restaurant and were quite content to have fish again. Dogfish for lunch, monkfish for dinner.
Tomorrow we get to see what these fish look like at the docks.
