Hawaii 2017- Day 2

Day 2: Whale Watching in Maui

As promised, I'll be brief.  We had a great morning whale watching from a zodiac in the Maui Straits.

Humpbacks feed all summer in Alaskan waters, then vacation in Maui from November through April.  While here in Hawaii, they have sex, and deliver their calves from the prior mating season, but eat nothing.
We were very fortunate this morning to see breech early on in the trip, pectoral fin flapping, and then the piece de resistance, a young calf with his mother that was amazingly playful.  He apparently just learned how to breech (jump out of the water) and did this over and over for about an hour.  I was fortunately able to get some nice shots.

The rest of the day consisted of a walk around the town of Lahaina,

an attempt by an Israeli to sell Jeri and Molly $900 make-up (he didn't know who he was dealing with),

and some needed ice cream for lunch.

We drove to the Iao Needle for a hike, but found out (when we saw a big "Road Closed" sign) that this area had been destroyed by mud slides and road washouts this past September.  We stopped at Maui Plantations on the way back, and picked up some snacks at their fruit stand.

Then to the Maui Aquarium to check out what we may see tomorrow.
Finally,  it was back to the condo for wine and appetizers before dinner at Mala's.

Tomorrow we are sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving, with a 6am pick-up.  So, off to bed for some needed rest.
