Day 10:Cyling
along the Danube
This morning we
had options of 2 rides, 20 and 47, so we, of course, chose 47. We hooked up with Erik and Beth and another
couple from Oregon (who I aptly named Lewis and Clark since they were great at
navigating the complicated routes), Becky and Paul. We road up the Danube to a
town called Tulln. We stopped there for
gelato (at 10:30 in the morning) and walked around the huge flea market that
they had going on.
We continued on
to another small town, Klosternberg, about 10 miles from Vienna to stop and look at
their magnificent church and abbey. Here we did find one hill. The cobblestones made climbing tricky.
Finally, back
to the ship and lunch. Then off again
for our afternoon ride, 27 miles through vineyards and fields of
sunflowers. We had a stop at a heuregen,
a small local wine shop and cold foods restaurant. None of us were very hungry or interested in
wine, but we drank a lot of their apple juice and water. We experimented with an apfelschorle, apple
juice and sparkling water that we learned about from the language program we
have been using. Not too bad.
We returned to
ship in time for a shower, a beer, and dinner.
Legs are a bit
sore after 74 miles today, but ready for tomorrow. We are going to test ride a new titanium
tandem and possibly a carbon tandem tomorrow.
Should be interesting. Could be
expensive!
