Sailing the San Juans Day 7

Day 7:  Sailing!
Before we left Friday Harbor, Jon, Jeri, Dave, and I went ashore to pick blackberries fro a cobbler for dinner tonight.  The thorns were a minor deterrent (a few scratches and pokes), but we picked a couple of pounds of blackberries in about ½ hour. These were amazingly sweet and juicy.

After breakfast, we departed Friday Harbor.  It was a testament to Jon’s boat handling skills that we made it out unscathed. There were boats coming in and out everywhere through a very congested channel.  This was the first time I saw the slightest hint of anxiety on his face. But out we came, and as we left the shelter of the island, the wind freshened and the sails came out.  The wind speed built to 20kts and the boat sailed beautifully.  I drove for a good part of the day, finally turning the wheel over to Dave, and then Marty. Marty offered to dock the boat for Jon, but he declined J.

We nestled into a protected anchorage on the mainland (Pleasant Bay in Chuckanut Bay) and Dave and I took out a kayak to explore.  It was pretty chilly, and no one else wanted to brave the cold.

We sat out on deck for cocktails and smoked salmon before our last dinner on Northwind.

Dinner was a chicken roulade and, yes, fresh blackberry cobbler.  After dinner, we finished the “Morning Light” movie we started last night, and then we had live entertainment.  We all went up on deck with Jette who serenaded us with songs from “Southern Cross” to “Winnie the Pooh”.  It was a real nice end to our cruise, sitting on deck in the dark with the stars out singing along with Jette playing guitar.

Tomorrow we are off to Port Angeles and Olympic National Park.
