Spanish Holiday: Day6

Day 6:  Cycling to Cap Formentor

Another beautiful day in Mallorca, another day waking with sore legs.  We are definitely feeling our age.  The ride this morning is a 40 mile ride (if you do the entire route, which are definitely not) with 4,300 feet of elevation gain.  It is an out and back starting  along the shore through the seaside town of Port de Pollenca,

then out to the northernmost point in Mallorca, Cap Formentor (sounds like a villain in the Transformer movies). The cape has 4 major climbs, and we decided to skip the first to try to save our legs.  It was a great idea.  The second and third climbs (and descents) were plenty.

A couple of mountain rams duking it out along the road

We made it views of the lighthouse before we turned around for the return trip.

The views on this route were the best of the trip, with the Mediterranean 1000 feet below us.

The road up from the 2nd descent is closed to cars, but busses travel up and down to bring tourists to the lighthouse for the views.  There is a large parking lot at the base that was empty when we passed it on the way out (early morning before the road opened), but by the time we returned,  cars were lining up to get into the parking lot and there were  a huge number of vehicles, (both big and small) and cyclists all trying to share the narrow road full of blind curves. Selu was going to drop us off at the top of the last climb, but there was no place for him to pull over, so he had to take us all the way to the bottom.  Jeri and I were thrilled, not having to negotiate the gauntlet to the bottom.  The remainder of the morning ride was pretty flat and it took us to the beach town of Cala San Vincec.

We grabbed a burger in town with a couple from the trip.  She is a pedodontist from Iowa and her husband runs the office. We had planned to ride the short, 7 miles back to the hotel, but we both were pretty whipped and decided there was no further shame in the shuttle.

We had a wonderful farewell dinner tonight under the stars. Tomorrow, one more short ride (hopefully we'll keep the rubber on the road), then goodbyes to all our cycling buddies.
