Olympic National Park Day 12

Day 12:  Hoh Rain Forest and Kalaloch Lodge

We left our house in Port Angeles this morning heading for the coastal area of the park with a stop in the Hoh Rain Forest.
The Hoh Rain Forest gets about 12 FEET of rain per year! As a result, the area is greener than Ireland.  We did a short loop hike to start with, then a 6 mi hike to a waterfall.

The trees here are gigantic rising to heights of 300 feet, and dripping with epiphytes.  The result was a very eerie but awe-inspiring environment.

From Hoh, we continued on to Kalaloch (pronounced “Klaylock”, what’s with these Olympians with dropping vowels?) right on the coast.  The coastal area here is very reminiscent of Maine, complete with huge rocks, waves, and fog.  Kalaloch Lodge is situated on Kalaloch Creek which empties into the ocean.

Our rooms had beautiful views of the creek and the beach,
which was a good thing because the rooms were a bit shabby, no different than any other national park lodge we’ve been to.

Tomorrow we are going to explore the beaches.
