Olympic National Park Day 8

Day 8:  Driving to Port Angeles

Overnight, the wind was howling with gusts up to 30 kts.  Sure glad I wasn’t the captain.  I would have been up all night making sure our anchor wasn’t dragging. By the time we woke, the wind had moderated to around 15kts, perfect for sailing.  Just as we were getting ready to set sail from Pleasant Bay, 2 orcas swam about 200yds off our stern.  Jon and Jette had never seen orcas here before!
We had to make Bellingham by around 10:30 (had to make a 3:30 ferry and had a significant drive ahead of us, but since the wind was so nice, we sailed for about an hour before turning on the engine.  Wish we could have had wind like this for the entire trip.

We docked pretty darn close to 10:30, and said goodbye to Jon, Jette, and Taylor.  From there we made our way to the airport to pick up our rental and began the drive to the Keystone Ferry.  The drive was a whole lot shorter than we expected (no traffic at all) and we got to the ferry terminal about 2 hours ahead of schedule. I guess we could have sailed a bunch more.  Instead of waiting in a hot car for 2 hours, we drove back to the closest town, Coupeville. It had an old New England feel to it, with weathered dock areas and old shops.  We found a nice little ice cream shop in town and a wlk around killed a good portion of the 2 hours.

Back at the ferry terminal, we enjoyed the 2ndin line position, which got us on and off the ferry quickly.  The ferry ride was dirt cheap, $26 for car and 6 passengers, and took about 45 minutes.

The remainder of the drive across the northern end of the Olympic Peninsula to Port Angeles took another 1 ½ hrs.
After a couple of missed turns and a call to the owner of our VRBO, we finally arrived at our house for the next 4 nights.  The house overlooked the ocean and had plenty of space for the 6 of us.  The construction was a bit shoddy, but we didn’t have to live here for long.
Tonight, we had a nice dinner at a local rewstaurant, with a wide variety to keep the crew satisfied; steak, halibut, chicken, salmon. After dinner, we stopped at Safeway to stock up. Bought enough for 2 weeks.  By the time we got to the house, we were all too exhausted for Scrabble and had to postpone the opening game, yet another night.
