The sun continues its streak! warm and partly cloudy. After breakfast, the ship’s crew put the entire collection of bikes ashore via a large scow and we followed over in tenders and Zodiacs.
Moorea is only 11 miles northwest of Tahiti and relatively small, 10 miles at its widest point. As with all the islands in French Polynesia, the island is circled by a reef, creating a lagoon that is sheltered from the waves of the surrounding ocean. This makes for a very comfortable anchorage.
All of the islands are ringed by a single road (making our two GPS computers superfluous) which made it very hard to get lost. In addition, since the road is on the coast, there is minimal elevation gain (for the most part).
We had the option for a side trip up Mt Belvedere for a stunning view, but we elected to shorten the climb and stop for ice cream at the Agricultural Research University instead.
There was one additional hill toward the end of the ride, but nothing too severe. Along the route, we were entertained by a heavily tattooed Polynesian dancer
and a storyteller telling us the history of the island.
We spent the afternoon after the first ride in the ship’s “Marina”, floating on rafts at the stern of the boat. Even Jeri got in the water. Water temps were in the hi 80’s- very comfortable!
The food on board is quite good, and the choices outstanding. And most importantly, the desserts are varied and amazing. We need to ride quite a bit more, tomorrow, to keep the weight from creeping up.
