African Safari 2019-Chimps, Gorillas, and the Migration Day 8

Day 8: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

This morning we left Mwyani Lodge for Bwindi.  The drive was a grueling 4-hour trip over very rough roads.  Along the way we did a slight detour through the very southern end of Queen Elizabeth Park (the Ishasha region) to search for tree climbing lions.  We spent about 1 ½ hours and saw almost nothing.  The park had burned large areas of grasslands to encourage new growth in the rainy season which drove the lions out of the area into the neighboring Congo. The drive, overall, was very disappointing, not to mention bone jarring.  We were thrilled to finally arrive at our home for the next 3 nights, Buhoma Lodge.

The hotel consisted of 10 treehouses that looked out onto the mountain on which the gorilla families live.  Ours, of course, was at the far end, but we had the fewest steps to climb, which made up for it.

Tomorrow we go gorilla hunting!
