Day 15: El Chalten to Buenos Aires

Early morning pickup for the 3 hour drive to the airport in El Calafate.  This time we had a van instead of a short bus, so it was a little cramped with all of our luggage.  But we got cozy and made it with plenty of time to spare (even with a pit stop at the Butch Cassidy  and Sundance Kid hotel). The winds here give planes amazing lift allowing them to take off at 10mph (not really, but it does help a lot).

When we got on the plane, the people sitting behind us were speaking with a heavy Texas drawl, so we asked them where they were from.  Turns out they live down the street from our good friends, Toby and Marty!  In fact, the woman and Toby play Mah Jong together.  Small world.  They invited us for a drink when we come to visit Toby and Marty in April.

The flight was about 3 hours landing us at the city airport (rather than the International Airport) which was only about a 15 min drive to our hotel in the fashionable Palermo Soho District in traffic.  On the way, we passed the Platta River (which is so wide here we thought it was the ocean- you can see water to the horizon), and several statues, parks, and
fountains.

The Mitico Hotel is a small boutique hotel that looks like a private residence from the street.  Very quiet, very posh.

Jeri was feeling a bit ill when we arrived at the hotel, heat, travelling, and God knows what else, and she skipped dinner with us.  We were directed to Don Luis, just up the street, for some excellent steak.

The temperature was well into the 90’s even at 7pm and the humidity was about the same (90’s %), so we were really looking forward to a nice, quiet, well air-conditioned dinner.  When we got to the restaurant, we were informed that there was a problem with the electricity, and since  the exhaust fan for the grill inside wasn’t working, it was hot and smoke making it impossible to sit inside.  We didn’t have the strength to seek out another restaurant, so we sat outside and sweltered and inhaled smoke from the pack of cigarettes the person next to us lit up incessantly.
Dave and I split a T-bone that was fantastic, and Rhonda and Milt after an aborted attempt at a prime rib steak,

went with the t-bone as well and were very happy with it.  There was a pear tart on the menu, which Jeri loves, so I brought a piece back to the room for her, to eat once she is feeling better.  If it’s not gone by tomorrow night, though,  it will be eaten.
