Our trip began very uneventfully. Jeri and I met Dave and Carol Wood at Logan while we awaited our first flights. They were off to Newark, we to Miami but our gates were not too far apart, so Carol moseyed over for a pre-flight briefing. There second leg was supposed to them into Lima about 1/2 hour after us so we planned on seeing them at Jorge Chavez International Airport in about 12 hours.
Our flight to Miami was on time and Molly and Dave (no Dave Wood did not magically transport to Miami- we later decided to go with Dave (Dave W), and David (Dave S.)))were waiting patiently at the gate for us. We hadn't been to Miami Airport for a very long time. It is not an airport one wants to fly through with any ambulating problems. It was easily a one-half mile walk from our arrival gate E20 to our departure gate D50. And they were right next to one another! Also, did you know that you can't find any ice cream anywhere at Miami International? Of all places not to have ice cream!
We landed pretty much on time in Lima (around 8:30 their time, CDT), but then so did everyone else (except Dave and Carol). The lines at passport control reminded us of several of our trips to Disney without the Disney charm. Finally got through, then on our way to pick up our luggage, the drug dog started going crazy over Jeri's backpack. After a few seconds of anxiety, we realized the dog had smelled the ripe bananas we had brought (and ate in Boston). I was a bit worried that I would have to visit Jeri in a Peruvian prison.
Our driver was waiting for us for the 35 minute drive to Miraflores, the section of Lima where our hotel was, on the pacific coast. Check-in was a breeze (our Travel agent, James Kinard with Vaya is great about taking care of all the little pain in the neck things) and after briefly thinking about a drink in the bar, decided to, instead, hit the sack. Our tour guide was meeting us at 9 the next morning. We found out the following morning, that Dave and Carol's flight was delayed and they did not make it to the hotel until midnight.
