This morning before our hike, we visited the archeological site of Ancasmarca. This was a storage site for grains and dried potatoes. There were hundreds of these storage facilities in varying states of reconstruction. They were strategically placed along Incan trails, and positioned to take advantage of dry winds and sun.
Our hike began in Cuncani at 12,595 ft. We had joining us "911" horses. Only way out if someone got hurt.
The hike took us to the Cruzccasa Pass at 13,838 ft. Along the way we passed herds of alpaca and llamas
We were not sure where she came from, but a significant way up from the valley floor, we found a woman who had set up shop for the crazy tourists.
As we crested the pass, it looked as if our weather luck had run out. We also were starting to run out of daylight-it was slow going at 13,000 ft!
But, we lucked out. The sky cleared and we made it to our new home for the next couple of nights, Huacahuasi Lodge.
